Audiometry Test in Singapore

There are different types of audiometry tests; some assess a person's ability to hear sounds at different frequencies while some assess the functional ability of a person's ear and hearing. The test results allow the audiologist to diagnose the severity of a patient's hearing loss and/or certain ear conditions, if any. Learn more about audiometry tests below and book an appointment with us today.

Types of Audiometry Tests

Hearing tests, or audiometric tests, measure your ability to hear the softest levels of sounds at individual pitches. They are painless and non-invasive, and can give you an indication of your overall hearing capabilities. At Hearing Partners, we are fully equipped with the latest technology in hearing diagnostic equipment, ensuring you receive the best care possible. Learn about the types of audiometry tests we offer below.

Suitable for: Adults, children, infants

Tympanometry measures middle ear function by testing how the eardrum responds to air pressure changes. Before the test, the audiologist checks the ear canal with an otoscope to ensure it is clear. During the test, a probe emits a tone and applies air pressure, recording how the middle ear absorbs or reflects sound.

Aside from middle ear conditions, tympanometry can also detect perforation (hole) in the eardrum that is not visible during otoscopy.

Suitable for: Adults, children above 5 years old

PTA is usually conducted in a sound-treated room wearing headphones/insert earphones connected to an audiometer. Sounds of different frequencies will be presented and you will be asked to give a signal when you hear the tone to determine the softest level of sounds you can detect at each frequency.

Suitable for: Children (6 months to 3 years old)

VRA can be conducted with sounds playing through speakers positioned at the sides of the room or through headphones/insert earphones if well tolerated by the child.

The audiologist will guide the child to look in the direction of the visual reinforcer, such as a moving toy or screen, when a sound is presented. This action is repeated to help the child form an association between the sound and the visual reinforcer before the test officially commences. Sounds of different intensities and frequencies will be played to assess the child's hearing levels.

It is important to note that the amount of results obtainable depends highly on the child's attention and interest.

Suitable for: Children (2.5 to 5 years old)

Play Audiometry begins with the audiologist showing the child some of the toys which will be used, such as balls and pegs, for familiarisation and conditioning. The child will be asked to carry out a development-appropriate task each time a sound is heard, e.g. putting a toy into a basket.

Testing begins once the child understands the game. Different frequencies of sound will be tested to assess the child's hearing capabilities, with a greater focus on the frequencies that are important for speech learning and development. Headphones/insert earphones will be used to determine ear-specific results if they are well-tolerated by the child.

Like VRA, the amount of results obtainable depends highly on the child's attention and interest.

Suitable for: Adults, school-aged children

The speech discrimination test assesses a person's ability to differentiate speech sounds accurately by repeating what is heard. This performance can be monitored at different levels (e.g. soft, conversational and loud levels) and under different conditions (without hearing aids and with hearing aids). The speech discrimination score can also be compared to the pure tone audiometry test results to check for non-organic hearing loss and retrocochlear disorders.

A more advanced speech discrimination test – Speech In Noise test – can be done if someone faces listening difficulties specifically in noise. Functional listening problems are mostly experienced by individuals with hearing loss but the same problems can happen in normal hearing individuals too.

Audiometry Test Procedure

If you are taking a hearing test for the first time at Hearing Partners, here is what you can expect.

Consult our audiologists

The process will begin with a consultation with our audiologist. They will ask questions about you or your child's hearing concerns, medical history and lifestyle.

Undergo a physical ear examination

Our audiologist will physically examine you or your child's ears to identify potential issues contributing to hearing loss such as infections or inflammation.

Take an audiometry test

You or your child will take an audiometric test in a sound-treated room. This process is painless and non-invasive and will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Review the test results

Our audiologists will review the test results with you on the same day. They will advise on the next steps for your condition, if any.

How to Prepare for an Audiometry Test

To ensure the accuracy of your test results and to make your experience as smooth as possible, follow these tips:

Before the testOn the day of the test
  • Avoid visiting loud places* for at least 48 hours before your test as this can cause you to lose your hearing temporarily.
  • Ensure that there is no wax build-up in your ears. You can see a General Practitioner (GP) or Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctor to have the ear wax professionally removed.
  • Ask a friend or family member to accompany you for the test.
  • If you are bringing a child to do an audiometry test, try playing a game of "pretend" and introducing the idea of headphones and ear plugs to simulate the audiometric test session.
  • Bring along your passport or identification card.
  • Try to relax and stay calm.

*Loud places are environments where you need to raise your voice or yell to speak with somebody standing 1m away. This includes places such as nightclubs and concerts.

FAQs about Audiometry Tests in Singapore

Anyone who experiences symptoms of hearing loss is recommended to take an audiometry test. It is important to note that these symptoms may differ for each individual.

For those without signs of hearing loss, we recommend regular hearing tests to monitor changes in auditory health and allow for early intervention. Individuals 18 years of age and older should take an audiometric test at least once every 5 years, while those 40 years of age and older should take one once every 2 years.

For children, an audiometric test is recommended if they get colds/flu frequently or when their learning and/or speech development is a concern. Otherwise, regular hearing monitoring can be done before every change of academic environment e.g. before entering primary school and secondary school.

An audiometry test is crucial for detecting signs of hearing loss and determining the appropriate steps for treatment. Undetected hearing loss can negatively affect a child's language and communication skills. On the other hand, leaving hearing loss untreated in adults can result in the following:

  • Communication difficulties
  • Less social interaction and engagement
  • Cognitive decline
  • Dementia
  • Poorer quality of life
  • Increased risk of accidents (as they may fail to hear auditory cues such as a car horn)

You can take an audiometry test at any of our hearing centres in Singapore. Book an appointment today!

You may take an online hearing test from the comfort of your home. However, for a more comprehensive evaluation of your hearing capabilities, we recommend taking an in-clinic audiometry test. Based on the test results, our hearing care professionals can provide tailored recommendations to address your hearing concerns.
