What Does an Audiologist Do?

Audiologists are healthcare professionals who specialise in managing hearing and balance problems in both adults and children. They perform comprehensive audiometry tests to identify the type and severity of hearing loss, recommend suitable solutions, and provide ongoing support to help individuals hear and communicate more effectively.

For people with hearing loss, an audiologist can prescribe, fit, programme, and fine-tune hearing aids based on their hearing needs and lifestyle. They also provide counselling on hearing health, teach patients how to use and care for their hearing aids, and make adjustments over time to ensure optimal performance.

What Is the Difference: Audiologists vs Audiometrists?

Both audiologists and audiometrists are fully qualified to prescribe, fit, programme, and fine-tune hearing aids, so you can receive high-quality hearing aid care from either.

The main difference lies in the scope of their practice. Audiologists have additional training in complex diagnostic testing and medical evaluation of hearing and balance disorders. This enables them to investigate more complicated hearing conditions, perform specialised assessments, and work closely with other healthcare professionals when further medical treatment is needed.

For most people seeking hearing aids or routine hearing care, both audiologists and audiometrists are well-equipped to assess hearing, recommend appropriate hearing aids, and provide ongoing support. If a more complex hearing or balance condition is suspected, an audiologist can perform further diagnostic evaluations or refer you to an appropriate medical specialist such as an ENT doctor.

What Is the Difference: Audiologist vs ENT Doctor?

An audiologist is a hearing specialist who focuses on identifying, assessing and managing hearing loss. They conduct hearing tests, recommend appropriate treatments and fit hearing devices to improve an individual’s quality of life.

On the other hand, an ENT doctor is a medical doctor who deals with a broader range of conditions affecting the ears, nose, throat, head and neck. In addition to ear-related issues, ENTs diagnose and treat problems such as sinus infections, tonsil or adenoid disease, balance disorders and even perform surgeries when required.

In short, an audiologist is often the first point of contact for concerns primarily about hearing loss or hearing devices. If ear symptoms are accompanied by ear pain, infection, dizziness or other medical issues, you may be referred to an ENT doctor. At Hearing Partners, we work closely with ENT doctors to provide holistic hearing healthcare solutions.

FAQs About Audiologists and Audiometrists

Audiologists are healthcare professionals who focus on hearing and balance disorders. They diagnose patients and propose tailored products and/or solutions to help them cope with their condition.

Signs that you should see an audiologist/audiometrician include:

  • You have tinnitus or hear ringing in your ears
  • You always turn up the volume of the TV
  • Your family complains that the TV is too loud
  • People lean closer to your ear to speak to you

Audiologists are highly trained healthcare professionals, but they are not medical doctors. To practise audiology, they must complete at least a master’s degree in the field, and many pursue a Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree. While this is a doctoral qualification, it is not considered a medical degree.

Audiologists specialise in diagnosing and managing hearing and balance disorders, and may also choose to focus on specific areas such as paediatric audiology.

Both audiologists and audiometrists are hearing health specialists. The main difference lies in their job scope.

Audiometrists are skilled in conducting basic hearing tests and diagnosing hearing losses in adults. They may also provide suggestions and counselling on hearing amplification and fine-tune hearing devices, if necessary.

Audiologists have a slightly wider job scope. They manage both adult and paediatric cases, including newborns. They may also perform a greater range of tests other than pure tone audiometry to identify certain lesions or dysfunction in the auditory system. Besides hearing tests, audiologists can also perform vestibular tests to diagnose certain balance issues.

Yes, they can! Do note that you must first be cleared of any other conditions that may require medical attention, such as ear infections, injury to the ear, sudden hearing loss and so on. If you present any symptoms of the conditions mentioned, it is recommended that you first consult an ENT.

You may schedule an appointment with our audiologists at any of our hearing clinics across Singapore. We have 11 clinics conveniently located across the island, including the heartlands.
